Redemptive Opportunity
80% of adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities are unemployed after high school, therefore EXCLUDED from many of life's opportunities, creating feelings of abandonment and depression and limiting social interactions and physical activity. NYAJ creates a place where these amazingly talented individuals are INCLUDED creating a community of acceptance and freeing the caregiver of our friends to choose to rest or enter the workforce.
Business Model
NYAJ employs students and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities side by side their neurotypical peers in an inspiring coffeeshop environment creating unique opportunities for employment, education and social engagement. As a non-profit that is a social enterprise, NYAJ earns much of its revenue through the sales of products and services and uses fundraising to secure funds for new locations, special projects, and credentialed staffing.
Biggest Organizational Need
Monies to secure credentialed staff for work with those of special needs as well as recruiting/retaining executive staff with experience in marketing, finance, and site duplication within the food industry.
Monies to open more stores which in turn creates more jobs for those with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
Executive consulting to ensure transition into growth trajectory is responsible and systems are secure for added volume.
Capital/Funding Plan
NYAJ Funding Needs:
-Everyone to be a regular customer and monthly donor. www.nyaj.coffee
-Corporate sponsors for each store and training center at $1,000-$5,000 a month.
-Funding for a new store in Stillwater at $250,000-$500,000.
-Funding for the first non-residential collegiate certificate program in Oklahoma for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities at $500,000.
-$10M to open 20+ stores across the US

Tim Herbel is the founder of the non-profit, Not Your Average Joe, an inspiring coffeeshop dedicated to reducing the unemployment of differently abled individuals after high school in addition to preparing those with intellectual and developmental disabilities in high school for the workforce.
NYAJ roast’s their own coffee and serves exceptional food and homemade ice cream. You can visit NYAJ in Midtown, in Norman adjacent to OU, inside Homeland Grocery stores in NW & NE OKC, and in Broken Arrow. Their newest location will open soon in the Ron Norick downtown OKC library and next fall, NYAJ will launch in Edmond. They also cater and give Ted-style talks on the importance of inclusion for people of all abilities and how it helps organizations in learning and earning. Tim is a two time graduate of Oklahoma Christian University with degrees in ministry and has served professionally as a pastor, worship leader, teacher, professor and financial consultant prior to his work as the executive director at NYAJ. Tim is also an NCAA sports arena announcer in the OKC area. He is married to Lynn and is the proud dad of Kinsey, step-dad of David and host-dad of German daughters, Charlotte, Paula, Lya, Linnea and Sophie.
He loves to read, sing and solve problems.
On occasion, he’s been known to create problems as well.
